BIO / MALKA LUBELSKI

Malka Lubelski is an NYC & LA based pianist and violinist with a lifetime of experience across many genres and mediums. She is currently an Ethnomusicology student at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where she is a part of numerous school ensembles, from chamber to orchestra, to her own jazz-pop fusion band, Sumting Blue, which she co-founded. She was classically trained in piano and violin at Third Street Music School in Lower Manhattan, taught by pianist Joan Forsyth and violinist Chiu-Chen Liu.

Malka Lubelski was raised in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NYC, and was influenced by the rich musical culture of the city. She studied at Third Street Music School, taking private lessons, music theory, and orchestra. In 2023, she was selected to be the student soloist at the Third Street Annual Benefit Gala. She has performed in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Salmagundi Club, the MET Museum and the Oculus.

Malka Lubelski has dedicated her summers to performing and participating in music festivals around the world, notably the Austria Summer Music Festival (2023) and the YXIE France Summer Music Festival (2024, 2025).

A Stuyvesant High School graduate, she was a large part of the musical community there, as an occasional student conductor of the Stuyvesant Orchestras, a first violinist in the Stuyvesant Symphony Orchestra, and a chamber musician. She regularly accompanied the Stuyvesant Choruses in small string ensembles and she was the Student Union Events Director, for which she started and planned the annual Stuy Faculty’s Got Talent Show.

In her senior year of high school, Malka Lubelski was accepted into the New York Youth Symphony’s Chamber Music Program. She was the pianist for the beautiful Luminé Quartet, and played works by Mozart, Mahler, and Frances-Hoad at the Weill Recital Hall, the MET Museum, and other venues.

Also in her senior year of high school, she was the Second Violin Principal of the ISO Symphony Orchestra for the Fall 2024 season. She led the section as they performed works by Tchaikovsky, William Dawson, and Ethel Smyth.

At this time, she was accepted into the renowned UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. She is currently in her first year there, majoring in Ethnomusicology and minoring in Film & TV Studies.

In her first quarter at UCLA, Malka Lubelski has joined and created many ensembles. She joined Regina Carter’s String Jazz Combo, the Gingersmock Ensemble. She successfully auditioned into the UCLA Symphony Orchestra and recently had her first performance in the Schoenberg Concert Hall, performing repertoire by Sibelius, Falla, and Barber. Malka Lubelski is also the pianist for the Quintessential Quintet, a UCLA-based chamber quintet, for which she regularly performs around UCLA’s campus.

Malka Lubelski is also the pianist for Sumting Blue, an LA-based jazz-pop fusion band, which she co-founded in the fall of 2025. They have performed on and off-campus around the local Westwood area and continue to expand their repertoire as they grow.

In December 2025, she conducted Merrily We Roll Along with a UCLA-based theater company, Afterparty’s. She conducted an amazing group of musicians for three nights and four shows.

A passionate musician and collaborator, Malka Lubelski continues to find and create amazing projects that involve other hardworking musicians. She has mentors of her own and has worked as a mentor of youth in NYC throughout her high school career. Malka Lubelski’s growing career is a testament to her unwavering dedication to the beauty and importance she values and sees in the music she learns and creates.
